How to Deal with Post-Travel Depression

Tips for making the transition from travel to home life easier

You've just returned from a tropical destination to a cold home environment, and you have no idea what to do with yourself. You feel lost because you're carrying so many new experiences and memories, but nothing back home has changed. In this article, I'll share some tips on how to overcome the feelings of emptiness and sadness that hit during the first few days after coming back home from a trip.

1. Slowly get back into a routine

When you get home, there's no need to jump straight back into your daily responsibilities. Give yourself time to adjust and gradually get back into the routine you have at home. Take a few days to rest and slowly unpack your luggage. Clean your home and tidy up your surroundings to create space for new energy.

2. Enjoy the things you didn't have on your trip

Sometimes we feel homesick on our trip, but when we return home, we feel the opposite. During moments like that, think about the things you were missing while you were travelling. Visit family and friends you haven't seen in a while. Have lunch at your favourite local restaurant. Take a stroll through your favourite spots in your hometown. Do everything you couldn't do on your trip!

3. Plan a new trip

It's not uncommon if you just got home yesterday and are already thinking about taking new trips. If you start planning a new trip right away, it will give you something to look forward to. It might not happen as quickly as you’d like, but just the thought that one day you’ll travel again can help reduce the feeling of emptiness you’re experiencing now.

4. Travel at home

While travelling, you were probably doing something new and exciting every day. Why not do it at home, too? Find new activities that will add excitement to your life. Consider a new sport or hobby. You can also travel at home and visit museums, galleries, or go hiking in nature. Your home country also has a lot of beautiful places that you can explore!

5. Think positively

Focus on all the beautiful things you experienced during your trip. Think of all the moments, funny anecdotes, and people you've met. Instead of dwelling on the fact that it's over, keep those memories as a treasure that will always bring a smile to your face. Some days will be harder than others when you put your winter coat back on and long for those warm days. Stay optimistic and know that every moment at home also brings new opportunities. The memories from distant places will always stay with you, but they can also serve as inspiration for the future. You can always plan new trips or simply find ways to bring a bit of that lively spirit you felt while travelling into your everyday life.

6. There is no place like home

Finally, remember this saying and be grateful for everything you have. Travelling is exciting, but what matters most is being able to return to the safety of your home and the comfort of your bed.

The hardest part is at the beginning, but if you follow these tips, you'll soon notice that your sadness will start to fade as you adjust back to life at home.
