Volunteering has been at the heart of Hostelling International Slovenia for over ten years. It lets us create content that encourages critical thinking, responsible travel, and solidarity, while giving young people (and those young at heart) a place to grow, gain experience, and take an active role in shaping the future.
Volunteers are the people behind our projects, media content, and educational programmes. With their energy, knowledge, and curiosity, they help create a space where travel becomes a chance to learn and make a positive difference in society.
Our volunteering programme currently focuses on three main activities that bring together international collaboration, media creation, and modern digital communication.
Travel Different for Future is an international educational programme that brings together young people from Slovenia, Germany, Portugal, and Spain. It is aimed at anyone interested in sustainable living and those who want to actively contribute to more responsible forms of travel.
Volunteers in the programme help develop and run interactive workshops on sustainable travel, lead activities in schools and youth organisations, and contribute to creating new approaches to informal education. An important part of their role is also sharing the programme’s values through the TDFF blog and social media. The programme also ran a campaign promoting environmentally friendly school trips.
Everyone involved in the programme belongs to an international community built around learning, creativity, and collaboration. Volunteers gain knowledge in sustainable development, experience working with young people, improve their language skills, and develop abilities that benefit them in their future personal and professional lives.
The online magazine Globetrotter is another example of how important volunteering is in creating high-quality content. The articles in the magazine are written almost entirely by volunteers, who share personal travel stories, interviews, and articles about interesting, different, and responsible ways to travel.
Through Globetrotter, young writers develop their style, explore topics that interest them, and get the chance for their voice to reach a wider audience. Volunteers use their contributions to share values, experiences, and perspectives that encourage reflection on the impact of travel on the environment and society.
The magazine is also an important part of HI Slovenia’s online presence and a key example of how volunteering makes long-term, consistent, and high-quality content possible.
The online travel series Popotniški Snep brings together travellers, listeners, and creators, and provides a space for conversations in Slovenian about travel experiences, cultural encounters, and personal stories.
Volunteers take part as guests on the show and help with preparing content, promoting it, and reaching a wider audience through social media. In doing so, they help create a media platform that is accessible, authentic, and appealing to young people, while also raising the online profile of Hostelling International Slovenia.
Because we value the time and energy our volunteers give to the community, we also give them small but meaningful tokens of appreciation. One of these is the travel T-shirt, which has become a recognizable symbol of Hostelling International Slovenia, a sign of belonging, and a reminder that travel is above all about experiences, meeting people, and a responsible attitude towards the world. Volunteers also receive an international Hostelling International membership card, which opens doors to a global network of hostels and communities that share the same values.
At HI Slovenia, we believe travel and solidarity go hand in hand. One of our initiatives is the fundraiser campaign called Children's Joy at Sea, which enables children with fewer opportunities to have an unforgettable holiday at Debeli Rtič in cooperation with the Red Cross of Slovenia. These are small acts that create big memories and a week full of laughter and play.
Volunteering at Hostelling International Slovenia takes place in an open, creative, and inclusive environment. Our volunteers are mainly young people under 30, but we alse value the role of older volunteers, whose knowledge and experience contribute to intergenerational collaboration. Many of the volunteers who joined us as youngsters stayed with us after their 30th birthday and are now taking on an important role as mentors.
With over 100 volunteers across Slovenia, we prove every day that change starts with people willing to share their time, ideas, and energy.
If you are interested in helping create content that encourages a fresh perspective on travel and the world, we invite you to join us. Volunteering at Hostelling International Slovenia is an opportunity to become part of a story that has a long-term positive impact.
