Hostelling Latvia are starting to offer excursions to the EDEN Latvia destinations.

This year Hostelling Latvia has designed and starting to promote and organize excursion not only to metropol and capital city –Riga, but also to emerging tourism destinations of Latvia.

Sustainable tourism developemnt is one of the EU priorities in Tourism development in Europe as well.  Six years ago there was started the Project called EDEN.   EDEN is the acronym for European Destinations of Excellence, a project promoting sustainable tourism development models across the European Union. Through the selection of destinations, EDEN effectively achieves the objective of drawing attention to the values, diversity and common features of European tourist destinations.

The key feature of the selected destinations is their commitment to social, cultural and environmental sustainability. The recipients of the award are emerging; little known European destinations located in the 27 Member States and candidate countries. The EDEN project helps to spread the sustainable practices used in the chosen destinations across the Union and to turn these places into all-year-round venues.

„The hostelling movement can help for sustainable development of emerging tourism destinations and these destinations are real hidden treasures in some cases” explains Armands Muiznieks, Chief of the Board of Hostelling Latvia. He continuos „we are not expecting high turnover on the first years of these new tourism products, but step by step included in our unformal educational programs all shareholders in these activities will be winners”.

There are much more tourism destinations in Latvia as Riga where around 80 % of travellers are going to. The EDEN winner Kuldiga, is the small town located in western part of Latvia –Kurzeme (former Courland) nests the widest waterfall in Europe. The  clay potts made by hands of Latgale potters in the Rezekne region was winners in the nomination of intangable heritage. Nature and family park in Tervete is full of activities attracting specially a young generation, but Ligatne paper mill village with the factory producing paper already around 160 years are still surprising every visitor. Jurmala sea resort offering not only beach holidays, but also water activities on the Lielupe River and also health treatments with mineral water. These are winners of all the times but there are totally about 18 tourism destinations in Latvia working on the sustainable tourism development.
