You probably know Dubrovnik from the Game of Thrones series, but you can experience the beautiful historical city and its surrounding landscape by visiting it. It’s because of the incredibly successful TV series that more and more people visit Dubrovnik, and you can even book a TV series-themed tour. The city is accessible via cheap flights, and if you opt for a Balkan road trip, it’s definitely one of the destinations along the way you need to put on your itinerary. We offer you a few short travel tips on what to see in this coastal city that is a definite gem of the Croatian seaside.
Dubrovnik is one of the cities listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is further proof of its rich history. The city is best explored on foot, walking down the Stradun and admiring the landmarks along the way, while also taking a look at all the beautiful churches from various periods. Of course, Dubrovnik also prides itself on crystal-clear waters and vibrant nightlife. As the summer recedes in most places, the sea in Dubrovnik is still pleasantly warm, and it beckons to the sailors who yearn to set out on an adventure on their sailing boats. That’s also how our journalist Alenka wanted to explore the Croatian coast. She took us all the way from Piran, a charming Slovenian town, to Dubrovnik on a sailing boat.
If you don’t want to stay on mainland, you can take one of the many ferries that go to the nearby islands. There’s one going to the island of Lastovo daily. Our journalist Jasmina named it the Sleeping Beauty of Dalmatia. The archipelago consists of 46 islands and reefs with unspoiled beaches and beautiful landscapes. There’s also a ferry that goes from Dubrovnik to the island of Mljet, which is even mentioned in the Odyssey and its national park is simply breath-taking. You can also visit the ancient Korčula, the birthplace of Marco Polo, or Šipanska Luka on the island of Šipan. If you love wine, you can even follow the wine trail on the island of Pelješac.
