Where on Earth is Bristol?

Bristol is the eighth largest city in the United Kingdom, with a very interesting history. In the 11th century, the town was called Brygestowe, meaning ''the place of assembly by the bridge''. It is the birthplace of the famous, mysterious graffiti artist Banksy, making it a great choice for graffiti lovers. You can take a guided tour to see his best works, but of course it's cheaper to explore the city and Banksy on your own.

The city's biggest attraction is definitely the Clifton Suspension Bridge, and is considered a masterpiece of design and engineering. It is free for cyclists and pedestrians to cross the bridge, but it is recommended to go up to Clifton Village and see it from above. The symbol of the city is a source of great pride for the townspeople, and you may be recommended a visit by a local.

If you are travelling with children, or you are an animal lover, you may be interested in the zoo that has stood there for 170 years. You won't want to miss the SS Great Britain, which is a reconstruction of a steamship and houses a museum that explains how a steamship works. You will also be impressed by the details that have been added to the ship, and witness the noise of the large pistons moving in the engine room. If that is not enough museums for you, there's also the gallery and the Bristol Museum, which is already impressive to look at. Bristol Cathedral, built between 1298 and 1330, is also impressive, as is St Mary Redcliffe, described by Queen Elizabeth I as the most beautiful parish church in England.

Are you a lover of nature and beautiful landscapes? The Cheddar Gorge is just a few kilometres from Bristol and offers beautiful cliffs and even caves where you can spot stalactites. Gough's Cave with its hidden chambers is also spectacular.
