Five best things travellers can do when they’re bound to their Home

We travellers can’t imagine a life without travel. But there’s always a possibility of something happening that prevents us from travelling and forcing us to stay, not only in our country, but in our own house. These things can include injuries, illnesses or worsening global security situations and health emergencies. In such circumstances, our need for something that will remind us of sunnier times and give us inspiration for future travels significantly increases.

1. Travelling around the world with Google Earth

Google Earth literally brings the world to your very own room and offers you a chance to wonder at the beauty of the world. It offers plenty to options that can be found on the left side of the screen. Choose a 3D model of buildings and drive through New York’s skyscrapers or Rome’s working-class neighbourhood. You can examine the relief of the Andes or discover interesting images while exploring, such as a heart-shaped lake or a migration of buffaloes. You can leave Earth behind and venture out into the space where you can take a look at the photos of constellations or land on Mars or Moon. Now you have the chance to create a real presentation of your travels with the help of the map, your own photos and videos, and send it to your friends and family.

2. Browsing travel websites

Check out Hostelling International Slovenia‘s website and you’re sure to find something to your liking. Read the travelogues, teeming with travel tips, which you can find in the Globetrotter online magazine. Browse through the stories of our volunteers’ exchange experiences to see how you can join them, too. And if you have a specific country in mind, you can check our map and simply click away. There are all kinds of awesome discounts for Hostelling International members you can check out – there are more than 3,000 of them. These include discounts on attractions as well as discounts on various courses. The website also has a lot of information about both Slovenian and foreign HI hostels, of which there are over 4,000.

3. Watching documentaries

You can admire the beauty of the world by watching documentaries and documentary series as well. They’ll take you to places you’ll probably never visit. There are many types to choose from, such as nature and wildlife documentaries or the ones telling stories of the people from bygone eras. They can show you from up close foxes playing high up on the Tibetan Plateau or indigenous people dancing in Papua New Guinea. Pick your favourite topic and enjoy. Or you can opt for live cameras and follow developments in your favourite cities.

4. Edit travel photos for free

We usually take a lot of photos when travelling. Some, we edit right away while others are left untouched on various devices for years on end. Now is the time to discard all those failed images and edit all the rest. This is where various free computer programs come in. GIMP is an excellent program with as many functions as in any paid program. The best of all is it also comes with a YouTube tutorial on how to use it. The main advantage of Pixlr, on the other hand, is that you don’t have to download any software. You can still freely post your best edited photos on your social media.

5. Discover the world with Lonely Planet

You’re allowed to daydream about travelling and searching for new destinations. This is just the right time to read some travel books. With Lonely Planet‘s help you can make plans for your next journey without even leaving home. Lonely Planet offers you guide books for almost all countries in the world. Other Lonely Planet books will give you recommendations on sustainable travel or tips on travelling for various types of people, such as vegans. The little ones, on the other hand, will probably enjoy special books for children the most. All HI members get 20% off all online purchases at Lonely Planet.
