Kranj, situated in the municipality's centre, is a pleasant old city with a varied history. Due to its rich cultural heritage it has been protected as the cultural monument as far back as 1983. A canyon in the town's centre and the river running through its’ basin, make the town a unique attraction in Europe. In the past, because of the strong currents of the river Kokra, water-mills were set up on its banks, and in 1901 a small hydroelectric power plant started to operate. The town’s development also hinged on the contributions of great Slovenians, of whom the most notable example is the poet France Prešeren. Today, Kranj is growing into a modern, multifaceted town, in which the past is seamlessly interwoven with modern times.
On the way to the village of Predoslje we arrive at the castle Brdo. This renaissance fort was built in 1510 on behalf of the governor of Gorizia and the proxy Carnolian governor J. Egkh (George from Brdo). Nowadays, the castle Brdo is a Slovenian government's main venue for diplomatic meetings, which was also the case in the first half of 2008, when Slovenia held the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
When visiting the centre of Gorenjska region, you should not miss the opportunity to visit the waterfall Šum, which boasts the highest stream-waterfall in Slovenia. It is easily accessible by road through Zgornja Besnica and Nova vas and a 10-minute walk up a steep path.
The municipality of Kranj is also proud to have one of the ten largest lakes in Slovenia, Lake Trboje, which emerged between Kranj and the village of Mavčiče as a result of stemming the river Sava. The lake is renowned for an abundance of birds; it is an especially important living place for the Goosander, as the majority of the Slovenian Goosander population nests and breeds here.

The town hides numerous underground tunnels, which are no longer used today. As outstanding examples of craftsmanship they invite us to discover their stories. One of the most interesting is a 1300-metre-long old town shelter, which was built during World War II, and is a testament to the interesting architectural features of the town. Nowadays, the tunnels are open for tourists' visits.
