THE  PASSION PLAY OF ŠKOFJA LOKA - PROCESSIO LOCOPOLITANA round nine years of pause again on viewing

Lent and Easter Time
Škofja Loka, from 28 March to 19 April 2009
The thousand-year old cultural town Škofja Loka carries many riches in itself. One of them is also the Passion Play of Škofja Loka, the oldest preserved drama text in the Slovenian language, and the only preserved passion screenplay from the Baroque in Europe. It was written in 1721 by Capuchin Friar Romuald Marušič. In the Baroque, the Passion Play was staged only a few times. 200 long years had to pass to stage it again in 1999 and 2000. The Passion Play of Škofja Loka will be revived again in 2009.
The Passion Play of Škofja Loka is performed as a procession, and its scenes are played on certain places of the medieval Škofja Loka (Town Square, Lower Square, Granary). It presents the story of the humankind from the fall of Adam and Eve, through the allegory of death to the suffering of Christ. Scenes, in which more than 600 players and 80 horsemen play, are moving on mobile stages, carts, horses or on foot along the streets and squares of Škofja Loka.
