Brežice is a place rich in cultural heritage, archaeologists discovered sites that testify the historical past of the medieval town and according to experts, Brežice is amongst the oldest Slovenian cities alongside Ptuj, Škofja Loka and Piran.

The significance Brežice has had in the Middle Age’s is still visible with the remains of city walls, the north and south city gates and towers. The evidence of a settlement in the Late Bronze Age and even traces of prehistoric settlements tell us about this age of discovery. Earlier this year the brochure "From the Brežice past" was issued. In this brochure the historical remains and artefacts in the area are marked clearly on a map. It explains latest discoveries and the exact position of the north front of the city walls along with the form and manner of construction of the entrance tower and the depth of the moat. Only last year at the site of today's new post office the remains of walls and defensive towers were discovered.

Brežice has been strongly entrenched from an early time. Thick, high walls and a deep moat have been defence for the city. The eastern wall is partly preserved; beside it houses and a 47 m high water tower stands on the street running parallel to the main square. City had two gates which were destroyed in 1750. North gate is currently a bureaucratic house (previous in the 1909th built German home) but the southern gate near the castle, which was given as shown in the year of the castle gate, the current form in the 1548th.

In 1501 The Emperor MaksimiIjan I. gave Brežice the right to its own coat of arms which has been preserved to the present day. It shows three hills above running water and a pyramid in the background. The running water represents the river Sava while the three hills signify the region of Styria, Carniola and Croatia. The pyramid behind these lands is a metaphor for the rising sun. The same emperor also granted Brežice two fairs and a weekly market day (Saturday). Habsburgs began to reign in Croatia in 1526 and since then the history of Brežice is closely connected with the history of Croatia. The Slovenian name Brežice (pronounced Brezhitsa) was formally known over 2 centuries as "Brežec" and “Brežici” the singular and plural form of the word.

We invite you to Brežice to experience all that we have to offer and to find out why the mornings here are closer to sun!
